Speaker: Dale Mikkelsen, Manager Planning and Sustainability, SFU Community Trust

Topic: Learning to be Living - Lessons in Building Community by Building on Learning

dale mikkelsen

Description:

UniverCity is envisioned as a model sustainable community and testing ground for innovative sustainable development strategies.  UniverCity also will use education to promote these principles in tangible ways. This dual strategy will be highlighted through discussion of two specific projects. 1) The development of a new elementary school in the heart of the community. Housed in an existing building renovated to LEED Gold standard, the school will also feature a curriculum that emphasizes sustainability using the building and the UniverCity community as a teaching tool. 2) The development of a new 50-space childcare centre to be housed in a purpose-built facility that will be the first buildings in Canada to meet the Living Building Challenge for new construction – all for less than the cost of a standard Childcare facility.

Speaker Bio:

Dale is the Director of Development for the SFU Community Trust, developer of UniverCity, a model sustainable community adjacent to Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC. Prior to working with SFU Community Trust, Dale was the lead project planner for the City of Vancouver’s 2010 Athlete’s Village. He also acted as the City’s Green Building Planner. He serves as a board member for the Cascadia Chapter of the Canadian and US Green Building Council and sits on the Board of the International Living Building Institute.
